What is stablecoin settlement?

Stablecoin settlement is the moment a stablecoin transfer becomes final on its blockchain — the tokens have moved to the recipient’s wallet and cannot be recalled. It typically completes in minutes, at any hour of any day. Unlike ACH, which settles in scheduled windows and can be returned, a settled stablecoin transfer is final.

01

How a stablecoin transfer settles

The transfer is created

A payment instruction names the asset, amount, and destination. On Infinite (infinite.net), the counterparty is screened before anything moves — settlement speed never skips the compliance step.

The transfer is recorded on-chain

The tokens move from the sender’s wallet to the recipient’s on a public blockchain. There is no batch window, no cutoff, and no correspondent bank in between.

Settlement becomes final in minutes

Once confirmed on-chain, the transfer is final — funds are the recipient’s to spend, at 2pm on Tuesday or 11pm on Saturday alike.

Dollars in, dollars out

Behind the token, the issuer mints when dollars come in and redeems when dollars go out, publishing reserve attestations so holders can verify one-for-one backing — how stablecoins hold their value is covered in the glossary.

02

How do settlement times compare across rails?

Settlement is where the rails genuinely differ — in timing, in operating hours, and in whether a “settled” payment can still come back.

RailSettlement timingHoursFinality
StablecoinMinutes24/7/365Final on-chain — a settled transfer cannot be recalled.
ACHSame-day or next-day batch windowsBanking daysDebits can be returned days after settlement.
FedwireImmediate (real-time gross settlement)Business days, defined operating hoursFinal and irrevocable once settled.
RTPInstant24/7/365Final — credit-push only, no return risk on received funds.
SWIFT wireSame day to two business days once released; up to five across long correspondent chainsBanking days, per-bank cutoffsSettles hop by hop over correspondent accounts.
03

Why does finality matter for a business?

Because a payment that can come back is not really settled. An ACH debit can be returned days later, which is why operating teams pair ACH with faster, final USD rails like Fedwire and RTP for urgent or high-value payments. A settled stablecoin transfer, like a received Fedwire, is final — no return risk, no reconciliation surprise next week.

In practice, accounts expose the distinction directly: an available balance — funds spendable right now — and a pending balance — funds in flight, awaiting settlement or compliance review. Finality is what moves money from pending to available and keeps it there.

04

What does settlement look like on the network?

Stablecoin settlement is one capability of the account, not a separate system: stablecoin payments settle in minutes with screening run before release, and every transfer is sub-ledgered with its screening record attached. When timing should decide the rail, Transfer Routes weighs stablecoins against SWIFT, US rails, and FX per payment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a settled stablecoin transfer be reversed?

No. Once the transfer is confirmed on-chain, settlement is final — there is no return window and no recall, the same finality a received Fedwire carries. That contrasts with ACH, where debits can be returned days after settlement — which is why finality matters for reconciliation.

How does stablecoin settlement compare with ACH?

ACH settles in same-day or next-day batch windows, on banking days, and an ACH debit can be returned days later. A stablecoin transfer settles in minutes, 24/7/365, and is final once confirmed. Operating teams often pair the cheap batch rail with faster, final USD rails for urgent payments.

What is the difference between available and pending balances?

Available balance is funds spendable right now; pending balance is funds in flight, awaiting settlement or compliance review. Finality is what moves money from pending to available and keeps it there. The ledger model behind both is described in the API’s core concepts.

Which payment rails settle 24/7?

Two of the rails Infinite offers run around the clock: RTP, which settles instant USD credit transfers 24/7/365, and stablecoins, which settle on-chain in minutes at any hour. ACH and Fedwire follow banking days and hours, and SWIFT wires depend on per-bank cutoffs.
