Payment rails

RTP

RTP is the real-time payments network operated by The Clearing House. It settles USD credit transfers instantly and finally, 24 hours a day, every day of the year — including weekends and holidays when ACH and Fedwire are closed. Payments are credit-push only — a sender pushes funds; nothing can be pulled from an account — and capped at $10 million per transaction, a limit the network raised from $1 million in February 2025.

In practice

RTP matters for exactly the payments the older rails handle worst: a payout that must land on Saturday night, a supplier release at 11pm, an instant refund. Receiving banks must make funds available immediately, and settlement finality means no return risk on received funds. Coverage depends on the beneficiary’s bank participating in the network, which reaches roughly 70% of US demand deposit accounts directly, with technical reach to institutions holding close to 90%.

On Infinite, RTP is one of the three USD rails behind a single API. Specify it directly for instant payouts, or let routing select it when timing demands it and the amount fits.

What is the difference between RTP and FedNow?

Both settle US payments instantly, around the clock. RTP is run by The Clearing House and launched in 2017; FedNow is the Federal Reserve’s network, launched in 2023 to extend instant payments to banks of every size. They are separate networks with separate limits, and many banks participate in both.

What is the difference between RTP and Fedwire?

Both are final, but Fedwire is the high-value rail bound to business-day operating hours with no practical amount limit, while RTP is instant, runs 24/7/365, and carries a $10 million per-transaction limit set by the network. Fedwire
