SWIFT gpi
SWIFT gpi (global payments innovation) is SWIFT’s service standard for cross-border payments. Each gpi payment carries a unique end-to-end transaction reference (UETR), so banks and senders can track it hop by hop, see the fees deducted along the way, and receive confirmation when funds are credited — addressing the opacity of traditional correspondent chains.

What gpi changes is visibility, not structure: the payment still settles through correspondent accounts, so intermediary hops, lifting fees, cutoff times, and each bank’s compliance checks remain. Tracking tells you where a payment is stuck; it does not remove the places it can get stuck.
Infinite treats a SWIFT wire as one path among several: wires run from the same API as ACH, Fedwire, RTP, stablecoins, and FX, and Transfer Routes weighs the wire against rails that settle in minutes for each payment. When the wire wins, you get the tracking; when it doesn’t, you skip the chain entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Does SWIFT gpi make payments instant?
No. It speeds up and tracks payments over the existing correspondent model, but settlement still runs through banks’ correspondent accounts, operating hours, and compliance checks along the chain. Stablecoins vs SWIFT
How fast are SWIFT gpi payments?
SWIFT reports that roughly half of gpi payments are credited to the beneficiary within 30 minutes and nearly all within 24 hours. The slow cases come from the last mile — the receiving bank’s operating hours, local FX controls, and compliance checks rather than the network itself.
What is a UETR?
The unique end-to-end transaction reference: a 36-character identifier assigned when a payment is created and passed by every bank in the chain, which is what lets the sender and each institution track the payment’s status hop by hop. UETRs have been mandatory on all SWIFT payment messages since 2018. SWIFT Payments
